The Apis Mellifera

Did you know that during the rainy season honey bees feed on honey they collected and stored in the dry season? This is a great lesson that some humans should learn from. The drones are the male bees and their only job is to mate with the queen bee. He (the drone) has no stinger and get this, if there is a shortage of food he gets evicted! Wow!

If working in an apiary, you would eventually notice that each colony has its own identifiable scent. A colony is known to have anywhere from 20,000 to 60,000 honey bees. Honey bee workers come and go, and to them the queen is god; because while they live a matter of weeks, the queen lives about four to five years.

The queen decides what gender of bee she will make by the sperm she uses to fertilize an egg. The queen has total control, and only produces as many drones as needed.

On an average, honey hive bees fly collectively about 95,000 miles. It is the only known insect that produces food that humans can eat; a food that is said to have all necessary substances to sustain life. We now know that the honey bee has been around for at least 95 million years.

Sometimes, a honey bee can be seen face to face with another honey bee, and other times they do a dance. This is how the bees communicate with each other.

Older bees in the hive are responsible for getting any dead bees out of the hive. They are also responsible for removing diseased and/or dead brood from the hive.
